The xGov Council Call for Applications

xGov council inception

As determined by the community in the Governance Period 13 Voting Session, the council election shall be conducted through a specialized general governance voting session.

For the first time, the governance session will not incorporate rewards; nevertheless, it will maintain its established structure to ensure an efficient and secure voting process with alignment of intentions: a two-week commitment period followed by a two-week voting period.

It is important to note that, consistent with previous Governance Periods, the process entails no financial risk. Governors must maintain wallet balances above their committed amounts for all four weeks to ensure vote validity. No slashing or other penalties will be applied. However, that address vote will be invalidated if the wallet balance falls below the committed amount before the period ends.

xGov council election

During Governance Period 14, the Algorand community participated in a voting session to determine the structural and operational features of the new xGov council. The voting results from this period show a clear preference from the community regarding specific aspects of the council’s formation and function, emphasizing accountability.

These community-validated decisions will directly shape the xGov council’s design and implementation, ensuring that it aligns with the Algorand community’s expectations. The vote results will guide the next steps in creating the xGov council.

The main decisions are the following:

  • The full name of each xGov council applicant must be publicly disclosed for accountability.
  • xGov Council members retain the prerogative to submit grants, contingent upon abstaining from voting on their proposals.
  • Each xGov Council member will receive a remuneration of 5,000 Algo per year.

Call for applications

You can apply to the xGov council by following ARC-83 instructions: every candidate must make a pull request of the template provided and include all the relevant information that the community needs to assess the applicant’s skills and Algorand experience.

Applications are open from April 4 2025 for an expected period of at least 4 weeks.

As this is an inaugural process and the appetite for this role is not known in advance, the official end of the application period and the commencement of the xGov council election will be contingent upon receiving a sufficient volume of candidate applications that could result in a maximum of 13 elected councilors and 2 supplementary members.

What happens after the election

Upon completing the election process, the xGov council will serve a term of 12 months, barring exceptional circumstances.

Once the council is settled, we will work to develop a performance evaluation methodology with input from all council members. This will include a procedure for removing underperforming and/or inactive council members, as identified through performance evaluation, and replacing them with supplementary members. The initial council may refine the specific protocols of this process once they are in place.

Are you going to count the algos locked in the AMM pools as well as it was until now? Are you going to allow lock of the amm lp pool token?

Will staked ALGO be counted?

@scholtz the idea is to replicate the process of the previous governance periods, so there will be the list of eligible LP tokens.
@fisherman.algo in general staking Algos is completely independent from the commitment and vote: I can participate with my account in Consensus and participate in Governance. If you refer to other forms of staking like liquid staking or staking pools, you touched an interesting point: as of today there is not a clear idea, but in general the broader is the audience of governors, the better it is. Interested to hear your thoughts and explore possible solutions.

Lot of community members are participating in consensus via Reti pools and other liquid staking protocols. It would be great if we can increase the number of governors by allowing them to participate. This will make sure more people engage in decision making process.
